Port Botany Industrial Container Yard
In October 2003, Polyroad stabilisation was carried out in
an industrial estate within Port Botany, New South Wales. The site
involves the movement of road freight and 40 foot shipping containers
within a confined industrial allotment. A 40 tonne industrial forklift is
used for all container movements.
The estate consists of varying granular materials that include recycled
concrete and asphalt products. Exposure to wet weather and tidal high
water table has traditionally caused havoc with accessibility for the
large number of semi-trailers and forklift movements.
Various pavement reconstruction options were considered by the client
including heavy-duty reinforced concrete slabs. Of particular concern was
the need to provide support for the extreme wheel loads of the forklift
when loading and unloading laden 40 foot shipping containers. Axle loads
of up to 70 tonnes were estimated for pavement design purposes.
Because the
design life of the pavement was not required to be more than approximately
five years, the option of incorporating Polyroad stabilisation of the
existing pavement materials was preferred, particularly Polyroad's ability
to significantly reduce moisture ingress and lessen the impact of
capillary rise from high water tables. To reduce dust generated from
severe tyre movements over a granular pavement, the site has been surfaced
with approximately 60mm of asphaltic concrete.
The site will be monitored over the coming years with particular
attention to any wet seasons that may be experienced and subsequent change
to water table levels. The site will generate considerable interest as the
axle loads that occur on a daily basis represent one of the most severe
situations encountered within the transport infrastructure industry.
